RIETI

Rieti is known as the capital of the Sabines and today still conserves a monumental town wall from the XI Century, a beautiful Communal Palace which lies close to the Prefecture Palace and a splendid Duomo with a Romanesque campanile.

CONTIGLIANO

Contigliano is a typical medieval village crowning the top of a hill.

The centre consists of buildings from the 14th and 15th century and is a network of narrow alleys where time has not gone by. Here you can find the beautiful collegiate church San Michele Arcangelo. www.comune.contigliano.ri.it

 

GRECCIO

This charming village, surmounted by the beautiful campanile of the church San Michele Arcangelo, is above all well-known for the Franciscan monastery after which the village was named. In the “Valle Santa” (holy valley) of  Rieti at its four cardinal points you can find four Franciscan monasteries (Greccio, Poggio Bustone, La Foresta, Fonte Colombo), you can also visit the four sanctuaries going on the pilgrimage “Cammino di Francesco”. www.camminodifrancesco.it.

LABRO

A beautiful medieval village with a Castle of the noble family Nobili-Vitelleschi which can be visited upon request to the family who still lives there.

ABBAZIA DI FARFA

One of the most important monuments of  European Middle Ages. As a matter of fact between the IX and XII Century, thanks to the self-government granted by Carlo Magno

the Abbey extended its possessions to great part of the centre of Italy.

LE CASCATE DELLE MARMORE

Created by a natural wonder like the union of the rivers Nera and Velino the waterfall can  be admired in daytime but also in the evening with a fascinating illumination.

NATURAL RESERVE LAKES LUNGO AND RIPASOTTILE

A protected area created in 1985 with an exceptional fauna.

MOUNT TERMINILLO

An interesting destination for excursionists and mountaineers with extensive beech woods, occasionally haunted by wolves, and rock faces where the golden eagle nidificates.

In winter Mount Terminillo is one of the most well-known ski resorts of central Italy.

  • Rieti: Third Sunday each month “Mostra Mercato dell’Antiquariato”.

  • Contigliano: Second Sunday each month “Fiera delle Merci e dei Prodotti Tipici”.

  • Contigliano: Good Friday – the Way of the Cross and representation with period   costumes of  Jesus’  Crucifixion.

  • Piano di Contigliano: Easter Monday  “Festa della Madonna del Piano”.

  • Rieti:  9th July  “Festa del Sole”,concerts, exhibitions, competitions on the River  Velino.

  • Contigliano:  10th August,  Fair of San Lorenzo.

  • Contigliano 14th August,  Feast of "Lu Pizzocotto" - short sticks of yeast pasta with olive oil, garlic and hot pepper.

  • Contigliano: 4th-7th August “Assalto al Castello” – historical commemoration of the assault of the castle in 1501: concerts, shows, games, typical dishes.

  • Greccio: 8th-11th Dicembre Crib (Crèche) Exhibit and Fair.

  • Greccio: 24th Dicembre (Christmas night) historical recalling of the first live Crib.
